An alarm has been sounded by US security services after a file was sent to the White House, containing the deadly substance ricin.

According to the New York Times, federal agents confirmed that the envelope contained ricin, a potent toxic substance used in torture and murder. There is no known antidote for ricin.

Federal investigators are trying to determine who sent the envelope and whether other envelopes were sent over the mail network.

It is unclear at what stage the file was placed before it reached the White House mail room, but investigators believe it was sent from Canada, according to an NYT official.

Correspondence destined for the White House is noted to be classified and verified at off-site facilities, before it reaches the US President.

So far there are no comments from the White House on the incident.
