An alarm has been sounded at the White House after a file containing a lethal substance was sent.
According to US media, federal agents report that the file contained castor bean, a highly toxic protein that has been used in terrorist attacks
It is unclear when the envelope was found before it reached the White House mail room, but investigators believe it was shipped from Canadaaccording to an official.
Federal investigators are working to find out who sent it and to determine if other similar files have been mailed.
At the moment, there is no comment on the incident from the White House.
It should be noted that similar letters containing ricin were sent to former US President Barack Obama.
What is ricin?
Ricin is an extremely toxic natural lectin found in the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). A dose of pure ricin powder the size of a few grains of table salt can cause death in an adult. The median lethal dose (LD 50) of ricin is approximately 22 micrograms per kilogram of body weight (1.78 milligrams for the average adult).
Ricin is very poisonous whether inhaled, injected or ingested. It acts as a toxin by inhibiting protein synthesis.
