More than 3,000 people have fallen ill in northwest China following a 2019 leak of bacteria from a biopharmaceutical factory that produces vaccines for animals, authorities said.
Brucellosis (honey fever) is a disease transmitted by animals or livestock products. It is generally not transmissible between humans. However, it can cause fever, joint pain, and headaches.
A total of 3,245 people tested positive for the bacteria after tests were conducted after the incident, according to health authorities in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province.
They clarified that no cases of person-to-person transmission were detected.
A public laboratory located in the city used an expired disinfectant from July to August 2019 during the production of anti-brucellosis vaccines for animals, authorities clarified on Tuesday.
This resulted in incomplete sterilization and the bacteria was still present in the company’s gas emissions – the Lantzou Biopharmaceutical Plant for livestock.
The contaminated gas spread through the air to the neighboring Veterinary Research Institute, where it infected nearly 200 people last December.
The Lanzhou Health Bureau announced today that the bacteria are generally derived from sheep, cows or pigs.
The lab apologized earlier this year for revoking the license to produce brucellosis vaccines.
Those who become ill will receive financial compensation from October, according to Lanzo authorities.
