An old woman in Farsala lost her life due to bad weather in Farsala while two people are still missing in Karditsa. Huge damage is already being recorded in the areas affected by “Ianos”, where firefighters had to intervene overnight in hundreds of cases either to free citizens or to pump water from flooded buildings and cut down trees.

Extensive flooding is widespread in many areas, including the city of Rio in Patras.

Ithaca, Zakynthos and Cephalonia, which received the first blow from “Janos”, have been declared in a state of emergency, while the regional units of Evritania, Fthiotida, Evia and Viotia are in a state of Special Mobilization of Civil Protection, in view of current weather conditions. . The effort to record the damage is ongoing, while the phenomena in western Greece have yet to abate.

Weather forecast

The bad weather is expected to continue on Saturday, according to the weather forecast of the National Observatory of Athens – meteo.gr, until the early hours of Saturday afternoon.

The effects are expected to affect most of the eastern and southern parts of the continent, Evia, as well as the northern and western Cyclades and temporarily the southern Ionian. Areas that will be affected include the prefecture of Attica and the city of Athens.

The effects will move further south and at night will mainly affect the western parts of Crete, while in other areas they will stop.

Thessaly

The situation in the Thessaly region is dramatic, as an elderly woman has already lost her life in Farsala, where an attempt is also made to free some 30 people at the city’s train station.

There are also two missing persons. In Mouzaki, the driver of a vehicle that tried to cross the ring road was ignored, for which he was swept away by the rapid waters of the river that had overflowed.

Due to the phenomena and the accumulation of water, the bridges and other infrastructures have receded, while during the night part of the village of Prodromos had to be evacuated.

In Almyros, after an operation by the Firefighters, three people were rescued, who had been trapped in a torrent.

In total in Thessaly (Magnesia, Farsala, Karditsa, Mouzaki, Rouso and Sofades) the Fire Services have received 630 calls and 450 rescues, 120 bombs and 40 fellings of trees have been carried out.

In Mouzaki, the driver of a vehicle is ignored who, despite the marks of the Police and the Fire Brigade, tried to cross the ring road, as a result of which he was swept away by the torrent of waters from the flooded river. Furthermore, due to the large accumulation of water, bridges and other infrastructure have receded. During the night, part of the village of Prodromos had to be evacuated.

In other areas

• In southern Ionian (Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos and Lefkada) the Fire Services have received 750 calls and so far 93 rescues, 308 bombs, 198 fellings of trees and 35 removal of objects have been carried out.

• In Western Greece (Achaia, Ilia, Etoloakarnania), the Fire Services have received 63 calls and so far 24 bombings and 39 logging have been carried out.

• In Central Greece (Lamia, Loutra Ypatis, Leianokladi, Makrakomi and Mexiates) the Fire Services have received 230 calls and so far there have been 76 rescues, 91 bombs and 2 felling of trees.

Civil Protection Meeting

A new technical meeting has been scheduled at the Civil Protection Operations Center, in the presence of Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias, to assess the situation and address the problems arising from the ongoing meteorological phenomena.
