After a first pass through western Greece, the Mediterranean cyclone “Ianos” now sweeps across central Greece and Thessaly, causing incalculable damage in its wake.
By early Friday night, the “eye” of the cyclone is over Kefalonia and the western Peloponnese. However, its consequences have been felt in eastern mainland Greece, where strong winds and large volumes of rain are observed.
Recently, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection declared a state of emergency in Cephalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos and a state of Special Mobilization for Civil Protection in Evritania, Fthiotida, Evia and Viotia.

“Janos” heads east of mainland Greece
Mediterranean cyclone “Ianos”, which swirled off the coast of western Greece this afternoon, is now slowly moving towards the southern, central and eastern parts of mainland Greece, where very heavy rains are already recorded.
Very heavy and prolonged rains are expected in the southern regions of central Greece and the eastern Peloponnese in the coming hours. And in Attica since night, according to the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, heavy rains are expected from time to time, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the prefecture.
Satellite estimates received and processed by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr show that in many areas of mainland Greece there is rapid rainfall of more than 50 millimeters per hour. 
In addition, the Observatory’s network of 360 ground meteorological stations recorded daily rainfall in excess of 140 mm until 5:20 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

For the immediate response to emergencies and the management of the consequences that may arise from the occurrence of extreme meteorological phenomena that already affect a large part of our country (Mediterranean Cyclone Janos), by order of the Vice Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardias decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the following Regional Units are declared in a state of Special Mobilization of Civil Protection: Evritania, Fthiotida, Evia and Viotia, from 09-18-2020 to 09-19-2020, due to a relevant alert for the areas them.
In addition, by order of the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias and decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the Regional Units of Kefallinia, Ithaca and Zakynthos and outside of Zakynthos declare themselves in a state of Civil Protection Emergency . to the Municipal Unit of Pylaros of the Municipality of Sami, for attending to emergencies and managing the consequences derived from the intense meteorological phenomena (heavy rains, floods) that occurred on 09-17-2020 in the aforementioned areas.
This statement will be valid from the start date of the occurrence of the phenomenon for six (6) months, that is, until March 17, 2021.
It is recalled that the Bridal Community of the Municipality of Argostoli and the Municipal Unit of Pylaros of the Municipality of Sami are already declared in a state of civil protection due to the disasters caused by severe weather (heavy rains) that occurred on October 3 and 4 2019 in the mentioned areas. It will be in this state until 05-10-2020 and 06-10-2020 respectively.
The Lamia – Karpenisi national road was cut in two
After the flooded road, another major problem was added to the Lamia – Karpenisi national road with the setback of the bridge at the height of Paliouri Kastri.

The good news is that they were not trapped in the part of the tunnel that had water and they were not injured either.
Serious problems throughout Fthiotida

The problems that “Ianos” has caused on the Volos road network are serious after the old National Route was cut in two. Heavy rains in the wider Almyros area in recent hours resulted in a large volume of water carrying the old bridge immediately after Aidini to Almyros.
Heavy raid on Karditsa too – “Balanou” bridge in Mouzaki collapsed
The onslaught of Cyclone Janos in Karditsa proved to be catastrophic. Due to the strong wave of bad weather, the “Balanou” bridge in Mouzaki collapsed.
Janos “hit” Karditsa a few minutes after 5:00 PM on Friday afternoon, causing the bridge to collapse, according to the KarditsaLive.Net website.
Thus, access to the community of Pefkofyto from the municipality of Mouzaki is cut off from the municipality of Mouzaki and from the entire east of Argithea from the access to the town of Mouzaki.
