The Mediterranean cyclone “Ianos” has already caused problems in western Greece, as Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaca were recently declared in a state of emergency.
Evritania, Fthiotida, Evia and Viotia are also in a state of Special Mobilization of Civil Protection.
According to Civil Protection, for the immediate response to emergencies and the management of the consequences that may arise from the occurrence of extreme meteorological phenomena that already affect a large part of our country (Mediterranean Cyclone Janos), by order of the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Management crisis, Nikos Hardalias and a decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, declare themselves in a state of Special Mobilization of Civil Protection the following Regional Units: Evritania, Fthiotida, Evia and Boeotia, from 09-18-2020 to 09-19-2020, due to a relevant warning for these areas.
In addition, by order of the Vice Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias and a decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, they declare The Regional Units of Kefallinia, Ithaca and Zakynthos are in a state of Civil Protection Emergency. With the exception of the Bridle Community of the Municipality of Argostoli and the Municipal Unit of Pylaros of the Municipality of Sami, to attend emergencies and manage the consequences derived from severe climatic phenomena (heavy rains, floods) that occurred on 09-17-2020 in above of the areas.
This statement will be valid from the start date of the occurrence of the phenomenon for six (6) months, that is, until March 17, 2021.
It is recalled that the Bridal Community of the Municipality of Argostoli and the Municipal Unit of Pylaros of the Municipality of Sami are already declared in a state of civil protection due to the disasters caused by severe weather (heavy rains) that occurred on October 3 and 4 2019 in the mentioned areas. It will be in this state until 05-10-2020 and 06-10-2020 respectively.
Where the cyclone moves
As of this afternoon, Janos is slowly moving towards the southern, central and eastern parts of mainland Greece, where very heavy rains are already recorded.
In the next few hours Very heavy and prolonged rains are expected in the southern regions of central Greece and the eastern Peloponnese.
In Attica From the afternoon hours, according to the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, heavy rains are expected from time to time, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the prefecture.
Satellite estimates received and processed by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr show that in many areas of mainland Greece there is rapid rainfall of more than 50 millimeters per hour.
In addition, the Observatory’s network of 360 ground meteorological stations recorded daily rainfall in excess of 140 mm until 5:20 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
It is recalled that the highest levels of precipitation of “Ianos” so far have been recorded in the maritime areas, registering the maximum in front of the Ionian Sea and being equal to 186 millimeters in 32 hours, from the beginning of Thursday to Friday by the morning.
On land, the highest total precipitation during the same period was recorded in Gavalou, Etoloakarnania and was equal to 123 mm, according to the National Observatory’s weather.
Disasters in the Ionian Islands
Floods, falling trees and property damage are just some of the consequences of bad weather that caused electricity problems in Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca, according to HEDNO.
Bad weather caused extensive damage to the Network and while the storm is raging, the crews’ job to repair the damage is very difficult.
HEDNO also warns all citizens not to approach any pipeline or other elements of the Network that are on land, because there is a very serious risk of an accident.
Trapped in Lamia
The Lamia – Karpenisi national highway in Fthiotida turned into a river and drivers were trapped in their cars in the early afternoon due to bad “Ianos” weather affecting the area.
Earlier, it was announced that all routes of the Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens railway line are suspended due to severe weather conditions.
The situation is similar on the provincial roads in the wider Lianokladi area in the Stirfaka, Zelefto, Paliouri and Loutra Ypatis areas.
The Lamia – Karpenisi national road has been flooded near Lianokladi while traffic has been stopped by order of the Traffic Police, on the outskirts of Lamia, near Stavros.
