What seismologists estimate
Talking to in.gr Efthymios Lekkas, professor of geology and president of OASP, was reassuring about the continuation of the phenomenon.
As he estimated, no problem is expected, because the depth is 50 km. “I don’t think we have a rich sequence of earthquakes.”
According to him, the earthquake was felt strongly, while small falls have been reported.
He stressed that the area is quite seismic.
For his part, the seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos, speaking in in.gr, argued that today’s earthquake may be a strong aftershock that occurred in the area on May 2, of magnitude 6.6 Richter.
As he said, in the last minutes there have been two, three aftershocks, the largest with a magnitude of 3.4 Richter, while he characterized it as very normal for others to follow.
According to him, this entire area is called the “Greek Trench” and consists of an area of active faults that give rise to strong earthquakes. For now, however, there is no cause for concern.
