The “third age” seems to have suffered the worst blow of the pandemic since to date 80.4% of deaths from coronavirus affect people over 65 years of age.
According to the data of the epidemiological report of the National Public Health Organization (EODY) delivered to advertising Wednesday afternoon (09/16), the average age of the cases in Greece remains at 39 years and only 13% of the cases refer to the elderly.
In particular, of the 14,041 cases registered to date, only 1,731 are in the vulnerable age group of people over 65.
However, in the age group over 65 years from last February to today 80.4% of deaths have occurred.
The age distribution of cases and deaths
80.8% of the cases, according to EODY data, refer to the youngest population groups, mainly those between 18 and 39 years old and those between 40 and 64 years old. These are 10,709 cases out of the total positive cases, which are divided into 5,861 cases in young people between 18 and 39 years old and 4,848 cases in people between 40 and 64 years old.
In fact, according to the data, the assistant professor of Epidemiology, Gikas Majorkinis, on the afternoon of this Tuesday during the information of the Ministry of Health on the spread of the coronavirus in the country, the age distribution of the last week is as follows:
- In the first place of positive cases is the age group of 25 to 34 years,
- In the second place of positive cases follows the age group of 45 to 54 years,
- In third place is the population group between 35 and 44 years old.
It should also be noted that the percentage of cases registered in the minor population of our country is very small. According to EODY, only a total of 822 cases have been confirmed in children and young people. At the same time, the minor patients who needed hospitalization so far had a positive result.
And if at first glance COVID-19 “hunts” people of productive age, it should be noted that most of the losses are recorded in the age group 65 years and over. 80.4% of deaths (that is, 254 people) are registered in this age group.
At the same time, 59 people aged 40 to 64 had a fatal outcome due to COVID-19, a percentage of 18.7%. Finally, three deaths have been reported in people ages 18 to 39.
ICUs are full of patients
At the same time, the fullness of ICUs for treating COVID-19 patients is of particular concern.
Specifically, the beds of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) that have been destined for the treatment of patients with coronavirus in hospitals throughout the country are 37.5% full, with the Ministry of Health planning a new increase in beds in Attica, which is at the epicenter of the second wave of the pandemic.
According to data published by Minister Vassilis Kikilias, there are currently 930 operating in Greece. Of these, 701 are available for patients with diseases other than Covid-19 (519 occupied, 182 vacant) and 229 are available exclusively for the treatment of patients with Covid-19 (223 in NSS hospitals, 6 in military).
Of the 229 ICU-Covid in the territory, 86 are occupied and 143 are unemployed, that is, the occupancy rate is 37.5%.
Particularly, in Attica hospitals out of a total of 330 ICU beds 255 ICU beds have been allocated for diseases other than Covid-19, of which 207 are occupied and 48 are vacant and 75 UCI-Covid beds, of which 53 are occupied and 22 are vacant.
81 ICU beds are available in the Thessaloniki Hospitals for diseases other than Covid-19, of which 60 are covered and 21 are vacant and 43 UCI-Covid beds, of which 17 are occupied and 26 are vacant.
Given aincrease in admissions observed in Attica hospitalsDue to the high epidemiological burden observed in recent days in the Region, the Ministry of Health is implementing the plan to increase ICU-Covid beds, as it did in the first phase of the pandemic.
More detail, 40 additional ICU-Covid beds added to meet Attica’s increased needs in the next 7 days. The plan that is activated includes the following additional beds: 12 in the General Hospital “I Sotiria”, 12 in the General Hospital Asklipieio Voulas, 6 in the General Hospital “Attikon”, 4 in the Military Hospitals of Attica and 6 in the Hospital Chalkida General.
As Vassilis Kikilias notes, “The Ministry of Health, by examining the data on a daily basis, has the opportunity to implement the next planning phase to further increase ICU beds for COVID-19 patients, when necessary.
Next to, The process of creating 236 new permanent ICU beds is underway from the large donations in recent months. Specifically, 155 state-of-the-art ICUs and 19 MAFs from the ISN donation will begin to be delivered to the NSS before the end of the year.
Likewise, the emblematic donation from the Greek Parliament for the construction of 50 ICU beds at the “H Sotiria” Hospital will be completed in October. Finally, the delivery of 8 ICUs and 4 MAFs to the General Hospital of the State of Nice is expected by the donation of Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, Ms. Angeliki Frangou and ION SA by the end of October ”, concludes the statement of the Minister of Health.
