The World Health Organization warned today that COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming rate in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, just a few months before the winter flu season.
“We are starting to see worrying trends in some countries,” Maria Van Kerkov, WHO director for Covid-19, said during a broadcast on social media.
“We are seeing an increase in the number of patients treated in hospitals, in intensive care units, especially in Spain, France, Montenegro, Ukraine and some states in the United States. “This is concerning as we have not yet entered the seasonal flu season.”
Furthermore, Van Kerkov noted that hospitalizations of patients aged 15 to 49 with Covid-19 are increasing in several countries.
For his part, Mike Ryan, the WHO emergency official, advised citizens at high risk of contracting Covid-19 to get vaccinated against the flu.
