“Bell” to citizens of the areas expected to be hit by the deep barometric low on Thursday afternoon, sounded the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, Nikos Hardalias. He explained that the phenomenon is known as the “Mediterranean cyclone” and is similar to the American tropical cyclones but is weaker, shorter and smaller in size and that it is a rare phenomenon that appeared from ’95 and tends to intensify.
As of Thursday afternoon it will begin to manifest itself initially in the southern Ionian and the Peloponnese. Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Elias, Messinia will be the first to be hit. It will then proceed to the northern Peloponnese and onto the mainland, where the effects are expected to be strong and long-lasting. Starting Friday night, the Cyclades and possibly Crete will be affected.
According to Mr. Hardalias, the effects of the phenomenon are similar to those of severe bad weather and can cause damage such as damage to roofs and falling of PPC poles.
The three guidelines for citizens of affected areas:
- Those who live in areas flooded in the past and near torrents and rivers, avoid staying in basements and crawl spaces and consider staying with family or friends.
- Avoid any movement, secure doors and windows and in case of torrents move to the highest points of the house
- Do not cross streams, streams, or roads that have been flooded for any reason.
