The Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, is trying to give answers to the “roll” that prevails in recent days about the situation in the Intensive Care Units. The government official confirms the anxious voices of doctors and nurses, especially for Attica hospitals. According to data released by the minister, in the largest region of the country, 75 ICU-Covid beds are available, of which 53 are occupied and 22 are unoccupied.

The increase in the number of patients in Attica has alerted authorities, who are in a rush to add 40 additional ICU-Covid beds to meet Attica’s growing needs in the next 7 days. The plan that is activated includes the following additional beds: 12 in the General Hospital “I Sotiria”, 12 in the General Hospital Asklipieio Voulas, 6 in the General Hospital “Attikon”, 4 in the Military Hospitals of Attica and 6 in the Hospital Chalkida General.

Vassilis Kikilias presented the situation that prevails throughout the country.

“The beds in the Intensive Care Units of the Territorial Hospitals today amount to 930. Of these, 701 are available for patients with diseases other than Covid-19 (519 occupied, 182 vacant) and 229 are available exclusively for the treatment of patients with Covid-19 (223 in NSS hospitals, 6 in military).

Of the 229 ICU-Covid in the territory, 86 are occupied and 143 are unemployed, that is, the occupancy rate is 37.5%, “said the minister.

According to the minister’s information, the process of creating 236 new permanent ICU beds is underway based on the large donations in recent months. Specifically, 155 UCI and 19 MAF from the ISN donation will begin to be delivered to the SNS before the end of the year.

Furthermore, the donation from the Greek Parliament for the construction of 50 ICU beds in the “Sotiria” Hospital will be completed in October.

Finally, the delivery of 8 ICU and 4 MAF to the General Hospital of the Nikaia State is expected by the donation of Evangelos Marinakis, Mrs. Angeliki Frangou and ION SA until the end of October.

Recall that today the hospital doctors warned that increased intubation is a matter of great concern.

In its announcement, OENGE calls for immediate interventions to avoid the ICU bed shortage and lead the situation, in essence, to “classify” patients, with the disastrous results seen in other countries, especially for the elderly.

At the same time, POEDIN published research on ICU beds operating across the country and existing staff, emphasizing that if more beds are not opened and the necessary recruitments are not made, there will be a huge wait in the winter.
