An extraordinary meeting was called by the Vice Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, on the bad weather “Ianos”, which is expected to hit our country in the next 24 hours.
The extraordinary meeting takes place at 3:00 p.m., in the Civil Protection Operations Center, in order to discuss the issues of dealing with the effects of the expected bad weather.
In addition to Mr. Hardalias, the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the Undersecretary General of Civil Protection, Georgios-Marios Karagiannis, director of the competent Planning-Response Directorate of the Air Force, the National Meteorological Service, as well as the Fire brigade.
Instructions to citizens
The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has informed the competent state services, which are involved in the operation, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, in order to be more alert to civil protection, in order to immediately address the effects severe weather.
At the same time, the GGP made recommendations to citizens, asking them to be especially careful, taking care to take measures to protect themselves from the dangers derived from the occurrence of severe meteorological phenomena.
In particular, in areas where heavy rains, thunderstorms, or hurricane-force winds are forecast:
- Secure items that, if swept away by severe weather, could cause damage or injury.
- Make sure gutters and gutters in houses are not blocked and are working normally.
- Avoid crossing streams and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rain, but also for several hours after the end of your event.
- Avoid field work and activities in the sea and coastal areas during severe weather (risk of lightning strikes).
- Take immediate precautions during a hail storm. Take shelter in a building or car and don’t leave the safe area until you are sure the storm is over. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.
- Avoid going under large trees, under hanging signs, and generally in areas where light objects (eg flower pots, broken glass, etc.) can break off and fall to the ground (eg under balconies).
- Faithfully follow the instructions of the locally competent bodies, such as Traffic, etc.
Extraordinary bulletin of dangerous meteorological phenomena
EMY has already issued an emergency bulletin of dangerous meteorological phenomena, due to the wave of bad weather that is expected.
Specifically, bad weather is expected to manifest itself in central and southern Greece from Thursday afternoon, starting from the southwest, with the main characteristics of heavy rains and storms and very windy winds.
In more detail, intense phenomena are predicted:
the Thursday (17-09-2020) since the afternoon, in the southern Ionian and the Peloponnese mainly in its western part.
the Friday (09-18-2020) in the southern Ionian, the Peloponnese, Sterea (including Attica) and Evia. Starting in the afternoon in the west the effects will weaken, while at night the western Cyclades will be affected. In the Peloponnese and the east of the continent, the phenomena will be very strong.
the Saturday (09-19-2020) the intense phenomena will affect the Eastern Peloponnese and the Eastern Continent, the Cyclades and possibly Crete. Starting at noon, the eastern mainland and eastern Peloponnese will gradually weaken.
Kallianos: Attica will be “hit” hard
Meteorologist Giannis Kallianos in his forecast notes that Attica will be “hit” hard by the weather.
“Attica will be at the center of the storms from early Friday until at intervals and in the hours before noon on Saturday,” says the meteorologist.
“Special care is needed because there is a great possibility of local hail. Apart from Attica, the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese, the rest of Sterea, Evia, the Cyclades and towards the end of bad weather (Sunday) Crete and the Dodecanese are they will be affected by very strong phenomena. “Pay attention to the strong winds that will cause problems in the Ionian and western coastal areas of the continent,” he also emphasizes.
