The scenario for the creation of a Mediterranean cyclone that moves to Greece has a very small probability, according to the weather of the National Observatory of Athens, which refers to current relevant publications. Most of the available prognostic models show unfavorable conditions for the creation of a medicane (as the phenomenon is internationally known by the union of the words Mediterranean and hurricanes) in the Ionian Sea and especially near the coast of our country.
Medicane is a relatively rare phenomenon, occurring once or twice a year and is a powerful barometric system with much in common with tropical cyclones. The main characteristic of the medicanes are the stormy winds that revolve around an “eye”, accompanied by torrential rains near the center of the barometric system and not on the hot and cold fronts, as is usually the case with the usual barometric lows of the Mediterranean. . They form mainly in autumn or early winter, over the relatively warm waters of the Mediterranean, in combination with the colder air, and draw energy from the activity of storms. The last drug that affected our country was “Xenophon” on September 29, 2018.
On the other hand, according to the weather, an atmospheric disturbance in the central Mediterranean region is already causing strong and long storms. Heavy rains are reported in areas of southern Italy, Malta, Tunisia and northwestern Libya, while storms will continue on Tuesday.
