For this terrible fiasco to occur with the masks distributed to schools, the Greek state (especially the entire public administration) remembered its worst self. This is the reality.
We explain: The masks are of two dimensions: 10×18 and 12×22. All project contractors (or at least most of them) committed to making masks of both dimensions. But clearly something went wrong.
Local government sources, speaking in News24 / 7, They said the specifications and dimensions were determined by the Interior Ministry following a relevant recommendation from the infectious diseases committee.
The above information transfers responsibility to the field of the Interior Minister, Takis Theodorikakou, who tweeted this Monday that “KEDE in a short time responded with transparency and efficiency in the supply of masks and their distribution throughout the country.”
But despite this strong statement, on Monday local government people asked the Ministry of Health this time to verify the specifications and dimensions for the next order.
It operates and done, as shown by the relevant announcement of the General Secretariat of Public Health which is the following: “Regarding the issue that has arisen from the masks that were distributed in some schools in the territory, the General Secretariat of Public Health points out:
As part of the process of restarting the school year and the safe integration of students into the school community, the relevant Committees that provide daily scientific support for the treatment of the coronavirus, among other things, recommended the dimensions for the masks of students and teachers.
Dimensions are in accordance with the respective international specifications. However, they were roughly the size of the fabric before sewing and not the final size of the two types of masks.
The wording of this distinction between initial and final dimensions was unclear, with the result that several of the distributed masks were larger than appropriate.
The General Secretariat of Public Health has clearly redefined the correct specifications and will send them back to KEDE, which is in charge of tendering their supply, so that the masks that will be distributed later are of the appropriate size. “
The beans from the masks no longer come out. In any case, the schools were waiting for other orders so that all students and teachers could cover themselves with at least two masks.
However, there is an admission (which of course has not been made public) that there was a failure and that intervention is necessary (which was finally done)even after a vacation. However, it has not been clarified whether other money will be given to KEDE for additional orders.
Anyway, at least some questions remain unanswered:
First: Why weren’t the masks tested before use?
2nd: Can the Greek public waste (because it turned out to be a waste) 6.2 million euros (distributed among 20 contractors) in times of pandemic and finally not do their job?
