Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the quarantine for at least three weeks across the country on Sunday night.
It is the first developed economy to reimpose such a measure to stop a second wave of coronavirus infection.
“The government has decided to impose a strict three-week quarantine with the possibility of extending this measure,” Netanyahu said.
Schools and shopping centers will be closed, but supermarkets and pharmacies will remain open. The public sector will operate with fewer personnel, but non-public services and companies will not be forced to close as long as they do not accept the public and customers.
Indoors, gatherings are limited to 10 people and no more than 20 outdoors.
The Finance Ministry announced that the quarantine is estimated to cost the economy $ 1.88 billion, which plunged into recession after the coronavirus.
