Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel will enter a national lockdown for three weeks, following warnings about the risk of collapse of the health system following the increase in coronavirus cases.
The increasing rate of transmission of the coronavirus is bringing Israeli hospitals closer to their maximum capacity, while destabilizing the health system, according to a report from the coronavirus information center. Experts warned the government on Thursday that there was a risk that the health system would collapse, so a new blockade was decided on Sunday.
Starting next Friday, when Israel enters the new blockade, schools, restaurants, shopping centers and hotels, among other businesses, will be closed. Pharmacies and supermarkets will remain open, Netanyahu said. Among other things, the movement of citizens is limited to a distance of 500 m from their home, while the rallies include a limit of 10 people for the indoor areas and 20 people for the open ones.
So far 153,759 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Israel, while 1,108 people have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
