US concerned about Turkey’s illegal actions: Pompeo’s message from Cyprus

The meeting of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, lasted about an hour, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

In the statements that followed, Mr. Anastasiadis referred to Turkey’s illegal excavations in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and Ankara’s provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Furthermore, the Cypriot president expressed his willingness to resume talks to resolve the Cyprus problem on the condition that Turkey’s illegal actions cease. Mr. Anastasiadis also spoke on the issue of Varosia and the closed city of Famagusta, noting that it would be illegal to take any action as the pseudo-state has threatened.

The Pompeo message

For his part, Mr. Pompeo stressed that the United States and Cyprus share the same values, while noting that it was decided to partially lift the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus.

At the same time, he referred to the creation of a security training center that will strengthen relations between the two countries.

On the issue of illegal Turkish actions, Pompeo stressed that he is in favor of finding a solution through diplomacy. “Tensions are not working. We remain concerned about Turkey’s illegal actions.” Greece and Cyprus have the right to extract within their Exclusive Zones, “he characteristically noted.
