A 23-year-old woman who beat two men when she was harassed has become a “hero” in Uzbekistan when the authorities decide to prosecute her.

Gulanam Aliyonova, a boxer, karate fighter and taekwondo fighter, beat a 30-year-old and a 33-year-old who harassed her. The incident occurred last June, but the Ministry of the Interior announced on September 8 that it had identified the woman who appeared in the video that was broadcast on social networks. At the same time, a preliminary examination was initiated against the 23-year-old, with the accusation of vandalism.

A day later, on Daryo’s website, Aliyonova explained that the incident started when the two men commented on the T-shirt and shorts she was wearing and then when she commented on them, they insulted her.

According to the 23-year-old, a man ripped her off her shirt, forcing her to use her martial arts knowledge. Her friend tried to intervene.

Many bloggers have come out in favor of Aliyonova, emphasizing that she should be rewarded for resisting those who harassed her and not taking her to court. The 23-year-old was also supported by Saida Mirziyoneva, the eldest daughter of the President of Uzbekistan.

“It hurts me when I see that the judiciary is immediately activated, with all its might, against women and journalists. “But it often fluctuates when it comes to men and officials,” Mirziyoneva, who worked for the government until January, wrote on social media, when she founded a non-governmental organization to promote press freedom.
