Images of shame for another night in Moria, with refugee families with young children sleeping on the asphalt.
Distraught and homeless, the Moria refugees tried to find refuge in churches, cemeteries and even in the middle of the street, with their children in their arms.
As soon as dawn broke, they lined up in the sun for hours for a plate of food and water.
The need to house and feed people is imperative.
In the early hours of the morning, 9 cages for the mattress forces that arrived yesterday on the island, 4 patrols and 2 auras disembarked from the ship “Isla Rodas”.
At noon on Friday, refugees staged a massive demonstration near Kara Tepe. Placing plastic bottles and holding banners and cartons with slogans, they shouted “Azadi” (“freedom”) and gathered in front of the barricaded MAT cages.
In Athens a solidarity march was held with the refugees, with the main demand for the closure of Moria-type structures.
At the same time, the government has begun work on the installation of a new camp, which will house some 3,000 refugees. However, the Municipality, residents and refugees react to its construction.
Strong police forces arrived on the island
From the morning thousands of refugees and immigrants gather in the street, or in the commercial patios and farms where they mount reed stumps and tents.
They believe that the closer they are to the Kara Tepe barrier, the faster they will leave for the port of Mytilene, from where they believe they will depart for Athens.
At the same time, the government is moving police forces to the island en masse.
MAT cages, “Aias” armored water discharge vehicles and patrols landed in the morning at the port of Mytilene.
Police authorities do not fear incidents, they simply act.
Where will the new refugee structure be established?
In the area where the new refugee and immigrant camp is being created to temporarily house 3,000 of the Moria refugees and immigrants affected by the fire, journalists and television crews were allowed in late in the afternoon.
The new camp is located very close to the Kara Tepe firing range, in an area that belongs to the Greek state and is used for actions by the Ministry of National Defense.
Since the morning, executives of the Armed Forces and employees of the former KYT have been working tirelessly, while as it became known, the structure will be temporary, and will affect 3,000 of those who lived in their burned camp.
In addition to the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration contributed to the establishment of the camp.
Refugees and immigrants affected by the fire will remain on the streets tonight, for the fourth consecutive night.
The mayor of Mytilene reacts
In a statement, the mayor of Mytilene, Stratis Kytelis, made public his opposition to the creation of the new structure, because “the municipality’s proposals for the decongestion and withdrawal of refugees and migrants from residential areas and from the island, which they also had the consent of the local deputy and second deputy speaker of Parliament, Mr. Charalambos Athanassiou, they were not heard. “
According to Kytelis, the choice to create the new structure in this area “is directly opposed to the national defense of our country, but also to the public health of the capital of our island.” She concludes by announcing reactions: “We will do everything possible to cancel it.”
Refugees responded with demonstrations
More than 2,000 refugees and migrants marched peacefully near Kara Tepe, where they have been marching for the past 24 hours after Tuesday’s fire that burned down Moria camp.
Placing plastic bottles and holding signs and cartons with slogans, they shouted “Azadi” (“freedom”), having gathered in front of the MAT cages that have built a barrier.
“We want to leave, let’s go free,” they shout against the police block.

MAT and “auras” in Lesbos
At a time when thousands of people are left homeless in search of food and clean water, the government is moving police forces en masse to the island.
MAT cages, “Aia” armored dump vehicles and patrols landed this morning at the port of Mytilene.
In total, the cages were driven along the stretch of road where immigrants and refugees live, from Kara Tepe to Moria. The armored water vehicles were stationed at the Fire Brigade base in Kara Tepe, according to the website stonisi.gr.
However, no policemen disembarked from the ship, which according to sources arrived in Mytilene with C 130 aircraft flights.
Solidarity march in the center of Athens
Anti-racist organizations are currently marching in central Athens as a sign of solidarity with the refugees from Moria.
The march, calling for the closure of the refugee reception centers “Moria type”, left Victoria Square bound for Parliament.
“End the drama of the Moria refugees – Stop the incendiary policy against refugees – Abolish Moria and all concentration camps-Residential housing” states the announcement of the Coordination for the refugee-immigrant.
“No” from Germany for the reception of refugees
The German parliament today debated, at the request of the Left party, the consequences of the destruction of the Moria refugee camp.
The left has requested the reception of the 13,000 refugees from Lesbos in Germany, in case the other EU member states are unwilling to accept refugees as well.
“In Moria, EU values were engulfed in flames,” said the KO co-chair of Dietmar Bartz’s party in an hour-long debate, which was interrupted by several speeches.
In his speech, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, as reported by DW, noted that Germany, in close coordination with the Greek government, is already helping to care for homeless refugees. Ten European countries, including Germany, are ready to accept 400 refugee children. Seehofer also noted that since 2015 Germany has received around 1.7 million refugees. Between 300 and 400 asylum seekers are admitted every day. “We are approaching once again the high numbers of the past,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed the need for a European solution to the refugee problem. The commission will present “holistic proposals” on September 30, he said. Rapid solutions are currently being found in the EU for refugees “with those who are willing to show solidarity”. A global problem cannot be solved at the national level but only at the European and international level, he stressed. At the beginning of his speech, Bartz had called “scandalous” the decision of the Interior Minister and member of the Bavarian Christian Social Union to prohibit German municipalities from accepting refugees from Greece. “His behavior is not Christian, his behavior is inhumane,” Didmar Barts said.
With the votes of the Christian unions CDU / CSU, the Social Democrats, the Liberals and the AfD, the request from the left was rejected, which was also supported by the Greens for the immediate reception of the refugees from Lesbos. The proposal was referred to the relevant parliamentary committees for discussion.
