In Spain, more than 12,000 new cases of coronavirus have been reported, according to the latest report released by the Ministry of Health, a record number in this country since the start of the pandemic.

Spain was the first Western European country this week to cross the 500,000-strong coronavirus outbreak. Today a total of 566,326 cases were officially registered, 12,183 more than Thursday’s report, and it is “the highest number of positive cases detected since the pandemic began,” according to the newspaper El País.

These new cases have not all been detected in the last 24 hours, since in the regions the competent health organizations sometimes need several days to send the information to the central government.

Mortality, on the other hand, remains much lower than at the peak of the pandemic, where up to 950 deaths were recorded in 24 hours in early April. In the last seven days there were 241 deaths.

Spain, which is among the most affected countries in Europe with about 30,000 deaths, has been experiencing a resurgence of the pandemic since July, with its epicenter in the Madrid region.
