Mitsotaki’s message to Moria: all national forces will help Lesbos – Politics

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a televised message on the situation in Moria on Wednesday afternoon:

“I deplore yesterday’s events in Moria. I recognize the difficult conditions. However, nothing can be used as an excuse for violent reactions to health checks. And, much more, for disturbances of this magnitude. The situation in Moria cannot continue. because it is at the same time a question of public health, humanity and national security.

The entire island is declared in a state of emergency. Which means that all national resources and all national forces will help you. All the unaccompanied children are already leaving today.

In fact, I informed the European authorities, with whom we are in constant cooperation. The problem of managing migratory waves is also mainly European.

Greece has already lifted a burden much heavier than its share. Tomorrow, the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schoinas, will visit Lesbos, with whom I will meet on Friday.

The state mechanism was immediately mobilized: the guests will be accommodated in suitable tents. Those who test positive for the virus will receive treatment. And the inhabitants of Lesbos will be compensated and protected.

There is already a government ladder on the ground. Detailed announcements will be made at six in the afternoon. However, no other immigrant or refugee will be allowed to travel. And there will be some traffic restrictions and local activities.

It is something extraordinary, but absolutely necessary. And I am sure our islanders will understand and join forces.

I remind you that more than 13,000 people have been transferred from Moria since the beginning of the year and things would, of course, have been much worse if the state had not blocked new migratory flows in the meantime.

Of course, the controls at our maritime borders, which are also European, will continue. With the efficiency that so far has drastically reduced illegal entries. I believe that a bad experience can quickly turn into an opportunity for a better reality. And this will happen on Lesbos.

Once the damage in Moria has been assessed, and in consultation with the European Commission, we will take concrete initiatives. Our priority continues to be everyone’s health and safety. Residents and immigrants.

However, I emphasize that Greece, with the support of Europe, knows and can defend security and peaceful life on its territory. Her national dignity, but united to her humanity towards the weak ”.
