Speaking of which, the pandemic was the only positive development for refugees for years. Raise the mat and place the subject underneath. The “deterrence” operations (whatever they are) continued and the calendar began to mark days without relevant news.
What happened in Moria was announced years ago. We saw it coming. When by boat and when he is crushed on the fence of Evros. It was in the ashes that small and large fires left in recent years. It was in a crowd of 13,000 that it is proving to be bigger and more powerful than any managerial arrangement.
Of course, it was arson. The Fire Department and the neighbors refer to many scattered foci around the Center, which were harvested due to the strong winds. Who is responsible for the arson? Spontaneously sparked by angry refugees and immigrants? Was a foreign service plan organized? Was it organized and executed by jihadists working for some on the opposite shore? It doesn’t matter that much, since the essence remains the same no matter which version we adopt: there is a big thorn in Greece’s side. And the delay in its management has its consequences. Ruins are fertile ground for affairs to flourish. Would evil have happened if Moria had been decongested? no one can be sure. Be that as it may, evil literally found us asleep.
Six months after the events of Evros, the country realizes once again that it can be attacked without even hearing a weapon. Even if we accept that a bad moment is responsible for the fire and nothing else, the problem of internal security shows its teeth. At the moment, Lesbos is in danger of becoming a black hole that swallows everything: law, order, the proper functioning of society, as it used to be. Because now you will not hear the slightest word about decongestion. It is now that no one will leave the island. Not only because of the coronavirus, but mainly because it is not possible for arsonists to obtain an operational “transfer”. After all, if you pass the message saying “we burn the center and go to Athens”, after a while Greece will look like a birthday cake from above.
We will see very harsh images of Lesbos. Thousands of impoverished homeless people roam, become more angry and desperate. Angry and frightened neighbors came to the aid of the police who, incidentally, had taken the stones during their previous visit to the island. The images of the island will go around the world, the fingerprints of Greece will be found again.
But the worst is another: what happened yesterday in Moria, tomorrow may happen elsewhere. And then what we read now in the ashes will be underlined. The Armed Forces guarantee the security of the country against any external intrusion. But what happens when the threat is in the country? And you know, we don’t have to be burned by others. When you hold a bomb in your hands for a long time, it is more likely to explode at some point.
