An inferno of fire on Lesbos as large fires have burned throughout the Moria refugee camp since midnight.
The fire has spread and thousands of refugees and migrants have fled to the surrounding mountains. Many are also heading to the city. The bells are ringing on the island, while the inhabitants are anxious.
As the mayor of Mytilene, Efstratios Kytelis speaking on the Society Hour MEGA program, has said, it was “a very difficult night for everyone and everyone on the island is worried.” In the midst of a pandemic, such a development is tragic, as at the moment 12,000 people are piled on the road and others have fled to the mountains, “Kytelis said.
“The structure has completely burned down”
Moria Community President Giannis Mastrogiannis spoke to “Society Hour MEGA” about the prevailing conditions in the area.
As he pointed out, the structure has completely caught fire and the people who lived there are on the streets.
“With the panic that has been created, nobody can assure anything,” Mastrogiannis added, emphasizing that the first outbreaks had broken out around 7 in the afternoon, but were extinguished by the Fire Department.
Mr. Panagiotis Deligiannis, a resident of Moria, spoke to “Koinonia Ora MEGA”, claiming that there are houses that are quite close to Eleonas’s camp, which are in danger of burning.
“The fire started from Eleonas, as opposed to the wind. We saw the refugees with the glasses go pointed and immediately afterwards a front exploded,” added Mr. Deligiannis.
How the fire started
According to the first information, the fire was preceded by episodes that began around 11 at night. The tension arose after the announcement of the 35 positive cases of coronavirus in the camp and the refusal of some of them to enter quarantine.
Quarantine deniers soon collided with others who pointed to the danger to the entire camp as groups of refugees tried to escape through the KYT for fear of transmitting the virus.
At around 11 a.m. the first flames appeared around the perimeter of KYT and towards Eleonas.

The fire spread rapidly within the KYT and there a group of applicants blocked the entry of the Fire Service.
Then the MAT intervened and with the use of tear gas and a click-flash dispersed the assembled crowd, but the fire had begun to burn all critical facilities, such as the offices of the European Asylum Service.
It should be noted that at the time of the fire, all the Lesbos fire brigades were at a distance of 70 km trying to control the double fire front that had previously erupted in Antissa and Vatoussa leaving about ten vehicles in the KYT that were impossible to pass. .

According to the APE-MPE, a large number of refugees and immigrants moved to Mytilene, passing through the town of Moria, while squads of MAT with cages have created a barrier at the height of Kara Tepe, preventing them from entering the city.

The commander of the Fire Service, Konstantinos Theofilopoulos, is heading directly to the area to coordinate the operation, as has the mayor of West Lesbos, Brigadier General Verros, who has given the order to help the tanker trucks.
