Masks for students and teachers in schools are expected to arrive around five before the first bell on September 14.
On Tuesday, after the approval by the Court of Accounts of the corresponding competition, the production of masks began, which will be delivered to all schools with a view to the start of the new school year.
According to the president of the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDE), Dimitris Papastergiou -who is also the body that carried out the corresponding tender- “the completion of the pre-contractual audit and the approval by the Court of Accounts today at noon of the procedures followed by the KEDE services, shows that all the procedures, despite being carried out in record time, were not deprived of transparency and legality ”.
According to Mr. Papastergiou, KEDE is immediately proceeding to “sign contracts with temporary contractors, some of whom have already started production of the masks.”
In addition, he points out that “in the coming days all the municipalities of the country will be invited (even during the weekend in some cases) to work so that on Monday morning they can find the schools with everything necessary for the start of a school year for sure. ” .

Papastergiou’s statement in detail:
“The Central Union of Greek Municipalities is organizing an en route race to complete the tender procedures for the supply of medical supplies (masks) and their delivery to all schools in the country on time, before the start of the school year. The completion of the pre-contractual audit and the approval by the Court of Accounts today at noon of the procedures followed by the KEDE services, shows that all the procedures, despite being carried out in record time, were not deprived of transparency and legality . At the same time, it allows us to proceed with the signing of contracts with temporary contractors, some of whom have already started the production of masks.
It said from the beginning that the Local Government in difficult times does not hide, but rather goes ahead, takes responsibility and gives solutions where others raise their hands.
I requested the mobilization and cooperation of all the competent bodies to be able to complete a contest in a few days, which otherwise would have taken months to carry out. The Court of Auditors, realizing the urgency of the case, gave its approval in a much shorter time compared to other similar cases.
“In the next few days, all the municipalities of the country will be invited (even during the weekend in some cases) to work so that on Monday morning they will find the schools with everything they need to start a safe school year.”
