Burning hell on Lesbos: Moria headquarters is on fire

Moria’s immigration structure on Lesbos turned into a fiery hell when, according to local testimonies, immigrants and refugees set fire to dozens of fires around the KYT. Due to the strong winds, the flames were transported very quickly within the facilities, with the result that the entire area became a great fire, burning everything and especially the containers and tents, where more than 12,000 refugees and migrants lived. The facilities were immediately evacuated, while thousands of migrants fled to be rescued in the surrounding areas, with the main volume heading towards the town of Moria.

According to the information, the fires broke out almost simultaneously and the situation worsened due to strong winds, blowing in the northeast Aegean Sea from noon.

In a few minutes the fires were consumed inside the premises, with the result that the entire structure caught fire, as you will see in the shocking video that follows:

According to the Neighborhood Association of Moria, Panagiouda and neighboring communities, “For quite some time, large fires have been occurring around the KYT. Outbreaks seem to flare up during this time. It’s probably arson. The fire with the force of the wind spreads rapidly. The bells are ringing! Our people are going through difficult times! The responsibilities and the shame on the neck of those who condemned us to live like this! “

According to neighbors, the firefighters who came to the scene were attacked with stones by immigrants and refugees.

According to the APE, the reason was the announcement that 35 people tested positive for the coronavirus and that they should be isolated along with their relatives and those who had been identified as their contacts. This would be done in warehouses outside the KYT on the road to Panagiouda.

Some of them reacted to the prospect of isolation and refused to leave the field. Others tried to leave the camp late at night, moving into the mountains, believing that in this way they would escape the danger of the coronavirus that would be caused by contact with those who refused to leave. The clashes between them soon sparked fires initially around the camp that burned all the tents outside and around the KYT and containers inside.

Around 2.30 in the morning, a large number of refugees and migrants appeared advancing towards the city passing through the town of Moria, while squads of MAT with cages had created a barrier at the height of Kara Tepe, preventing them from entering the city .

Two hottest fronts on Lesbos

However, two other fronts broke out overnight on Lesbos. One front is near Xirolimni, on the old Vatoussa – Skalochori road, with firefighters operating at the site so as not to threaten the Rhodes Cheese Factory.

However, there is a second front, towards Antissa.

All of Kalloni’s available firefighting vehicles have been activated, while forces are also arriving from Mytilene.

In Vatousa they were immediately mobilized 23 firefighters, a group of pedestrians and eight vehicles, assisted by local authorities that transport water.
