The murder of Willy Monteiro, a twenty-one-year-old who lived in the suburb of Rome Paliano, has caused excitement and outrage throughout Italy.
Willie, the son of Cape Verdean immigrants, died after a brutal beating that lasted almost twenty minutes.
According to many eyewitnesses and the Italian media, the murderers are four Italians between the ages of twenty and twenty-six. Athletes, with training in extreme martial arts and as their various positions attest, with racist treatment of immigrants and black citizens.
Willie didn’t judge them. He was only trying to defend his friend, against whom the four of them had begun to triumph because of, apparently, the look with which he had dared to look at a girl, in a nearby club.
But no one could defend Willie, who dreamed of becoming a famous cook, from indiscriminate violence.
The alleged perpetrators now deny any responsibility. But prosecutors, so far, consider the testimony against him to be sufficient and credible.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte spoke with the victim’s parents and asked all Italians to ask themselves why this blind violence is taking place and what it means.
The secretary of the center-left Democratic Party, Nicola Gingaretti, announced that his political force will financially support the Willy Monteiro family, so that their defenders can do whatever it takes to achieve full justice.
And the secretary of the League, Matteo Salvini, finally, in a post, stressed that “a golden child was killed by inhuman beings.”
