Guns, drugs, improvised knives, drugs and mobile phones were found, among other things, in a search carried out in two pavilions of the Corfu prison, in the early hours of the morning, following information from the Anti-Terrorist Department.

In particular, according to ELAS, in the search carried out in public areas and cells, in the presence of the director of the detention center and the Corfu Office of the First Instance Prosecutor, in the context of the appropriate use and evaluation of information-information on drug trafficking, they were identified and confiscated:

– Completely hidden on a metal surface in a common area: Pistol with 6-cartridge case, knife and improvised nylon packet with drugs, possibly heroin, in stone form, total gross weight 9.1 grams.

– Completely hidden in a wall in a common area: Pistol with 6 rounds of ammunition, magazine with 7 rounds of ammunition and silencer.

– In cells and other common areas: Three improvised cigarettes with raw hemp plant extracts, 2 mobile phones and a charger, 4 improvised knives, 3 hands-free headphones and a charging cable (USB).

– Likewise, in the yard, inside a shoe of an unknown prisoner, 19 improvised packages with extracts of raw hemp plants with a total gross weight of 9 grams and 2 wooden bats were found.

Once the investigation was completed, a case was brought against eight prisoners for the occasional crimes of illegal possession of drugs and illegal possession of firearms.

The assessment is that a massive escape attempt was prevented. Many life sentences are serving their sentences in this particular prison.

The weapons and other items were placed in an opening in the wall while an investigation is being conducted to determine if there was help from a correctional officer.

The preliminary investigation continues by the Corfu Security Sub-Directorate.

It is recalled that the Albanian Ibrahim Brahimi had recently tried to escape from the prisons of Corfu, where he is being held after having been convicted in the first instance for the murder of lawyer Michalis Zafeiropoulos in October 2017.

Brahimi, under the protection of his six inmates in the cell, had managed to break a padlock that leads to an area where access to detainees is normally prohibited.

There, he tried to poke a hole in the prison wall with makeshift tools, however, during regular inspection, a prison officer found that the lock had been broken.

A case was brought against Brahimi for attempted escape.

OSYE announcement

In a statement, the Federation of Prison Officers of Greece (OSYE) states that the search of the Corfu detention center by the local police forces, EKAM and DAEEB is in itself an important fact.

However, the findings, especially the two pistols and the silencer, make it a huge success for the services that performed it. Success, however, is one side of the same coin and failure is the other. “In this case, the other side of the coin has to do with our previous failure in service, since in order to put weapons in a prison, all the measures, the control framework, the defense lines and any means that could having been available before was obviously canceled. ” OSYE.

“It is in this spirit that our Federation faces the problem of importing weapons and will participate, requested or not, with all its strength to answer the following questions: How, when, by whom and for whom did the weapons finally enter? weapons in Corfu prison? “OSYE wonders.

As he adds, “based on the information so far about the research, the way and the process of conducting it, but mainly based on the number of other findings, we believe that it could definitely be done better.”

Finally, regarding the participation of the fight against terrorism in the investigation, without being able to exclude any privileged information, we will repeat that technology is a temptation and a “necessity” for the inmate society. It can be a sign of strength and supremacy for those who possess it, but it can also be a very “witness” at times. The latest generation mobile phones with the ability to communicate with social networks and especially with Facebook have a two-way cost. We hope that they have for all those who were somehow involved in the introduction of weapons into the Corfu prison and that they are revealed ”, he concludes.
