Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has expressed “deep concern” over Serbia’s decision to move its embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that his country and Kosovo had agreed to establish diplomatic relations and that Kosovo, together with Serbia, would open embassies in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu made the announcement shortly after US President Donald Trump announced in Washington that Serbia and Kosovo had agreed to normalize economic relations after two days of talks at the White House.
“Kosovo will be the first country with a Muslim majority to open an embassy in Jerusalem” Netanyahu said.
“As I have said in recent days, Israel’s cycle of peace and recognition is expanding and more countries are expected to join.” added.
Despite the fact that, in addition to Serbia, which is moving its embassy to Jerusalem, Kosovo is also proceeding with the recognition of Israel and the opening of its embassy in Jerusalem, the announcement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry refers only to the decision of Belgrade.
The announcement by the Turkish Foreign Minister reads:
“We are deeply concerned by Serbia’s decision to move its embassy from Israel to Jerusalem.
The annexation of Jerusalem by Israel was rejected by the international community and the United Nations (UN).
Various UN resolutions have repeatedly emphasized that the question of Palestine can only be resolved by establishing an independent, sovereign, and geographically continuous Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 border.
However, any country that moves its embassy to Jerusalem is a clear violation of international law.
“We urge all countries to abide by the UN resolutions on this issue, respect the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and refrain from actions that make it even more difficult to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Only two countries, the United States and Guatemala, have already opened embassies in Jerusalem, following the Trump administration’s decision, which infuriated the Palestinians.
Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed last month to normalize diplomatic relations in an agreement reached with Trump.
The Jerusalem regime is one of the thorniest obstacles to a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians, who hope that East Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, will become the capital of their future state.
Israel considers the entire city, including the eastern sector annexed after the 1967 war, as its capital.
