The SYRIZA Central Committee, which will meet next Sunday, will be invited to approve the proposals of the party president, Alexis Tsipras, which he presented to the party’s Political Secretariat today. These include a change of secretary, since for the position that Panos Skourletis has held so far, the SYRIZA president proposed to Dimitris Tzanakopoulos as well as the order for a massive change of people in the leadership of the main opposition party. Furthermore, Alexis Tsipras essentially proposed to hold the SYRIZA conference in the second half of 2021 as he correlated it with the prevailing health conditions in the country. With these facts, the Central Committee of the party is called upon to give Alexis Tsipras the opportunity to undertake with his own stamp the subsequent course of the official opposition.
Explaining his proposal to move the conference to 2021, Alexis Tsipras noted that at this time “we have a historical responsibility not to lose contact with society and its needs. We must admit that the process of preparing the Conference, which we have announced as “A conference of intersection and continuity for our expansion and transformation into a left-wing mass democratic party, was abruptly interrupted by the pandemic and that cost us.” “We have been waiting and waiting for a broad and participatory process, but the conditions of the pandemic does not allow us to do so. Cases are increasing, epidemiologists estimate that the next few months will likely be even more difficult. Under these conditions, “he said.” There is no possibility of holding a conference with physical presence. And a conference without physical presence cannot give the impetus we want. ”The Political Secretariat meeting moved in a low tone.
Disagreements were recorded at the meeting. Not so much because of Alexis Tsipras’ proposal, which to some extent was accepted as a presidential imposed will. Mainly on the subject of priorities. In other words, the need for a strategic nature of the discussion that is lacking in SYRIZA was pointed out, a lack that cannot be compensated with changes of face. However, the common belief is that with today’s meeting, a clear move was made to change SYRIZA’s operating model.
Also, from the side of Nikos Pappas, the proposal was presented again for the SYRIZA conference to take place in the autumn, exclusively by videoconference.
Tsipras’ proposal
With the proposal presented by Alexis Tsipras, he shows two things:
The first is that it takes the political initiative to formulate the political proposals of the official opposition, without being preceded by a conference process. At the same time, according to his proposal, the party’s program will be approved by the Central Committee for Reconstruction. That is, the body in which the directors of the expansion also participate. The subject of the next meeting of the Central Committee, which is also the highest organ of the party, will be the approval of the proposals of the Political Secretariat.
The second is that it changes the terms of the internal functioning of the party. This seems to be the aim of the change between Dimitris Tzanakopoulos as secretary and Panos Skourletis as parliamentary representative of the party. Dimitris Tzanakopoulos is considered a “bridge” between SYRIZA trends and at the same time a political figure who perceives the party’s priorities in the same way as the SYRIZA president. At the same time, however, it maintains open channels with the trend of “53” that in the previous period made its presence felt, through the interview – platform of Euclid Tsakalotos.
As far as the party leaders are concerned, the issue remains the exclusive competence of Alexis Tsipras. No names were released at the meeting of the Political Secretariat, nor will they be released in any of the other party bodies. The distribution of responsibilities will occur after personal meetings of the party president with those who will assume new informal portfolios or who will remain in their positions.
A similar scenario is expected at tomorrow’s meeting of the party’s Political Council, which is attended by members of the General Assembly and officials from the enlargement.
The interest is centered on two people who had a strong presence in the news: Nikos Pappas who received strong criticism after the publication of the conversation with businessman Sambi Mionis, but also Pavlos Polakis who has a special form of public expression. The topic of the spokesperson remains open where rumors want Alexis Haritsis to want to move to a productive ministry with Nasos Iliopoulos, one of the most prominent to succeed him, if he is finally convinced to leave the “Open City” and the Athens City Council. The information also wants one of the criteria for selecting people to be age, with an emphasis on younger executives.
