There is not one, but five Greek flags inside the office of the President of the Republic after taking office on March 13, 2020. At the same time, the Greek flag is everywhere inside and outside the Presidential Palace. This clarification is necessary, according to sources from the Presidency of the Republic, after the letter sent to Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou by the head of the Hellenic Solution, Mr. Velopoulos, in which he erroneously indicated that there was no Greek flag, not only in the courtyard. at the reception for the anniversary of the restoration of the Republic, but neither in the Palace nor in the offices of the Presidency. The director of the Special Office of the President of the Republic, El. Natsios, responded to Mr. Velopoulos with a letter, who clarified:
“The Greek flag has never stopped flying at the Presidential Palace, as defined in the relevant legislation. The Greek flag, as well as the flag of the European Union, never ceased to adorn the president’s office, as well as other areas of the Palace. Finally, in the ceremony for the anniversary of the restoration of the Republic that took place on July 24, 2020, both flags were placed in a prominent place in the garden of the Presidential Palace, in front of the Pavilion, where the President received the political leaders.
It should be noted that Ms. Sakellaropoulou’s first initiative after taking office was to attend the ceremony of raising the Greek flag by the presidential guard on the sacred rock of the Acropolis on 3/15/2020. It is interesting that inside the PD’s office there was no flag until 2015, as photos from earlier times show. The Greek flag was first placed by Mr. Pr. Pavlopoulos. Ms. Sakellaropoulou certainly saved it. What is not preserved is the presidential insignia, which looks like the flag, but is not. It was placed next to the couch during the Pavlopoulos presidency. The badge was introduced in 1979, but by 2015 it had not been placed within the Presidential Office.
Finally, with regard to the five flags within the Presidential Office, in addition to the large one, to the left of the Presidency, there are four smaller ones. Two of them saluted at Agathonisi and Strongyli. They were offered to the President during her official visits. The Strongyli flag is folded in a triangular wooden box and is accompanied by a small jar of soil from the island located at the far end of the SE Aegean after Kastellorizo.
