Pope Francis called for creative dialogue and respect for international law, referring to the situation between Greece and Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean.
“I view with concern the tensions in the eastern Mediterranean region and I call for creative dialogue and respect for international law to resolve the conflicts that threaten the peace of the peoples of this region,” the Pope said in a Twitter message.

On the occasion of the intervention of the head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Director of Communications of the Turkish Presidency and a close associate of Erdogan, also with his tweet, asked Greece to respect international law.
Specifically, Fahrettin Altun wrote: “I welcome the Pope’s statement on the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey asks Greece, among other things, to respect international law, instead of militarizing the Aegean islands and claiming our Blue Homeland. The Mediterranean must be a sea of peace and stability.
