The first results for the effectiveness of plasma therapy. They are expected in about 15 days.
Initially, plasma was collected from patients treated with COVID-19 with plasmapheresis. The volume collected after plasmapheresis was divided into 3 treatment units volume 200-233 ml. Each patient receives a total of 3 units in a row, two days apart.
The ratio is one donor per patient.
They participate in the study researchers from six Greek hospitals, it will last 20 months and I started with one sample of 60 donors. The main element that will determine the success of this therapeutic approach is the survival of the patients at three weeks, one month and two months after joining the study.
For the writing of the protocol, all the researchers from the hospitals that participated in the study participated. The study coordinators are Doctors Thanos Dimopoulos, Vasiliki Pappas, Marianna Politou, Evangelos Terpos, G. Panagiotakopoulos (Vice President of EODY).
The study was activated in the following hospitals (with the respective researchers):
- “Attikon” General University Hospital (V. Pappas, A. Antoniadou, A. Armaganidis, A. Bamias, S. Papageorgiou, A. Tsantes, S. Tsiodora)
- Athens General Hospital “The Annunciation” (S. Zakynthinos, A. Kotanidou, M. Pagoni, S. Saridakis)
- General University Hospital of Patras (Ch. Gogos)
- Athens General Hospital for Thoracic Diseases “Sotiria” (N. Koulouris, A. Koutsoukou, A. Pefanis)
- Athens General Hospital “Alexandra”, Blood Donation – “Aretaeion” Hospital (Th. Dimopoulos, E. Terpos, C. Matsouka, M. Politou)
- Cancer Cancer Oncology Hospital of Athens “Agios Savvas” (E. Grouzi).
The National Blood Donation Center manages the plasma units received from donors, and the Pasteur Institute has detected IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the donor plasma. At the same time, Professor G. Pavlakis of the NCI of EE. USA Actively supports it detection of specific neutralizing antibodies versus SARS-CoV-2 in the donor plasma.
It is necessary to meet the following criteria for the inclusion of a donor in the study: two negative results with the PCR technique for SARS-CoV-2 (nasal and / or pharyngeal smear).
Finally, there should be at least 2 weeks apart after complete recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection and immune response by detection of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in donor plasma.
