The disturbance prevails at Elpis Hospital, where doctors and nurses appear to have been infected by a Covid-19 patient who initially tested positive for coronavirus.
The patient was later found to be positive, but valuable time had already been lost after three doctors, a nurse, and a patient at the cardiology clinic had already contracted the disease. While awaiting the results for the rest of the staff and patients, at least 25 hospital employees have been placed under preventive house arrest.
According to the report, it all started a week ago, when a patient entered the hospital’s second pathology clinic, as a suspected case of the virus. The first test was negative and the patient was transferred to the second surgical clinic, where he was treated together with other pathological cases. After three days, however, he developed symptoms and a second test confirmed that the patient was positive for the virus.
Initial follow-up of the contacts showed that two more doctors and a nurse were infected and sick with COVID-19, while today a patient hospitalized at the cardiology clinic and another doctor were positive.
According to the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN), a total of 25 doctors and nurses have been placed under house arrest, while the cardiology clinic has been quarantined: “The clinic is in quarantine. Samples will be taken by staff. Employees are asking that the hospital be quarantined. Stop on duty. Disinfect and test all personnel. Unfortunately, the risk of dispersal is high. So far, 4 colleagues are sick. Positive patients were transferred to referral hospitals, “says POEDIN President Michalis Giannakos.
