Only patients who are sick are 60 years old, while there are several employees. A nurse on leave lost her life.
Sixty patients and various employees positive for coronavirus counts the largest welfare institution in northern Greece and one of the largest in the country and the Balkans, the Department of Chronic Diseases “Saint Panteleimon” of the Center for Social Welfare of Central Macedonia, based in Thessaloniki.
In “Agios Panteleimon” everyone, administration, employees, collaborators and caregivers, operate in “red” since the outbreak of the pandemic.
It was expected at some point, despite the rigor of the measures and the protocol, that the virus would penetrate.
Then, over several days, two employees tested positive in a preventive test and the repeat tests gradually began to give positive results for some patients.
In all, about 60 patients and several employees were tested positive at one institution, which houses about 300 patients and employs more than 200 people.
The sad thing is that already a 46-year-old nursing assistant, married and without children, lost the battle to survive. NK, according to the information, was on leave when he informed the management of the institution’s nursing service that he has a fever. She was discharged, followed by hospitalization and, although her condition remained stable, she relapsed and eventually lost her life.
EODY’s preventive controls on employees of the institution, but also of all branches, are continuous. Tomorrow, in fact, EODY will carry out another precautionary check. This is confirmed by all: management and employees.
The President of the Center for Social Welfare of Central Macedonia, Viki Nakou, which is under the supervision of this institution and the other respective centers, assured that all the required measures are fully complied with and in fact in a much stricter manner, while the inspections are continuous on a weekly basis.
According to EODY data, the virus entered from employees who were positive in preventive tests and it is characteristic that until October 30 the EODY tests showed that all were negative. The cases appeared at the beginning of November in two employees, when the quarantine process was followed in the departments where they work and compliance with all the instructions and the EODY and Civil Protection protocol.
Gradually, all employees and caregivers were evaluated, resulting in dozens of cases, about 60 in total in caregivers and several in employees. Most are asymptomatic and only ten required hospitalization. Asymptomatic patients are completing their quarantine these days, without consequences and their negativity has begun, while of the ten patients, the first was discharged today.
On Friday the quarantine cycle of the third group of positive cases is completed. The other two groups have completed the quarantine cycle and are now negative. Because the institution is closely monitored and the strictest standards are applied, with strict implementation of protection, hygiene and safety measures, positive cases were immediately identified in preventive controls carried out in collaboration with EODY, isolations were carried out in specially designed areas, which had provided administration, with the measures provided for in the protocol and global management, which in the case of a closed institution, with such serious cases of patients, is extremely difficult. Very strict measures are reverently followed from the first moment of the pandemic, but the virus is everywhere. Due to the sensitivity of the incidents housed within the institution, we are extremely careful. Almost every week all employees are evaluated. EODY is reassuring. Workers are fighting very hard in the welfare centers. Consider treating severe quadriplegic, severely mentally disabled, disabled, elderly with multiple illnesses and illnesses across the age range. A large part of the institution is currently in quarantine. In the next two weeks we expect a significant reduction in cases and I consider that it is a commitment of personal responsibility of all of us to protect ourselves from the transmission of the virus to people, such as those treated not only in Agios Panteleimon, but in all institutions, that “There are risks to their own lives, “Ms. Nakou stressed.
