3.1 magnitude earthquake in Ikaria – Newsbomb – News

A small earthquake occurred in Ikaria shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Friday (10/02/2020).

According to the Institute of Geodynamics, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1 with a focus on the sea area west of Ikaria.

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale had previously struck 82 kilometers south of Crete.

Earthquake protection measures

Citizens can find specific instructions on what to do during and after an earthquake on the website of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. The instructions are as follows:

If you are in the house

• Keep your mood.
• Lie down under a sturdy piece of furniture (table, desk, desk), kneel down, and support your foot with your hands.
• If there is no durable furniture, kneel in the middle of the room, reducing your height as much as possible and protecting your head and neck with your hands. Avoid large glass surfaces (windows, glass partitions) or furniture and objects that can damage it.
• Do not try to leave the house.
• Don’t go out onto the balcony.

If you are in a tall building

• Stay away from windows and exterior walls.

If you are in an entertainment venue, mall, or department store

• Keep your mood.
• Stay in the area until the vibration passes.
• Don’t be fooled by the panicking crowd moving erratically towards the exits because you risk being trampled on.

If you are outdoors

• Stay away from areas under buildings, telephone or electrical lines.
• If you have a bag or briefcase, cover your head with them.

If you are in the car

• Take shelter outside and stop the car carefully so as not to obstruct traffic.
• Avoid going through tunnels, bridges or overpasses.

What to do after the earthquake if you are inside the house

• Prepare for aftershocks.
• Examine yourself and those around you for possible injuries.
• If there are serious injuries, do not move them.
• Evacuate the building from the stairs (do not use the elevator), after first turning off the light, gas and water switches.
• Take shelter in an open and safe place.
• Follow the instructions of the Authorities and pay no attention to gossip.
• Do not use your car unnecessarily so as not to become an obstacle to the work of rescue teams.
• Use your landline or mobile phone in exceptional cases, as it causes overloading of the telephone networks.
• Avoid entering your home if you see damage, cut wires, gas, or gas leaks.
