Foresters in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu today described how they used a crane to lift an elephant from a well in a rescue operation that lasted more than 12 hours.

The elephant, wandering through a village bordering the Darmapuri area of Tamil Nadu, fell into a bush-covered well that was not fenced off, Rajkumar, a local forest official told Reuters.

Two other elephants have fallen into these wells in the last year in the area.

“It was a deep and narrow well,” explained the Indian official.

“The locals informed us Thursday morning and we managed to save the elephant that night.”

Authorities began the entire operation by clearing the bushes around the well and then trying to draw water from the well. However, the elephant reacted by looking at the water pipes, as described by Rajkumar.

“Finally, we anesthetized the animal with the help of the doctors and we used a crane to lift it out of the well.”

“The animal was healthy and active while we monitored its condition for three hours after the rescue operation.”
