The Google Pixel 5 remains shrouded in mystery due to the lack of large leaks. These new images are, in theory, just what we are looking for, but we are not convinced that they are legitimate.
The images, originally posted on Slashleaks by user Udagawa Ako (via PhoneArena), come from a page from business-to-business online retailer AliBaba. You are supposed to be selling a case for the Pixel 5, but you must be skeptical. This is nothing like what we expected for the Pixel 5.
A design for the Pixel 5 portrays it as having a U-shaped camera bump in the center of its back, with no scanner for Google’s Pixel Imprint fingerprint unlock technology. Also out of place is the headphone jack, which no longer usually appears on flagship phones. The last flagship Pixel with a headphone jack was the original Google Pixel and Pixel XL from 2016, with the only Pixels to have owned one since then. Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, which are very cheap devices.
While the case doesn’t cover much of the front of the phone, the placeholder design also looks bad because it features a notch. While the Pixel 3 XL had a notch similar to this one, the Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL All bezels used. In the case of the Pixel 4 series, this was to house Google’s Motion Sense radar sensor.
With Motion Sense proving to be disappointing, and the flagship smartphone design moving away from the notches and toward punching cameras, it would be very surprising if this is what Google had planned for the Pixel 5.
But think beyond the Pixel 5 for a second. There is a phone that we know comes from Google that may have a square camera patch, a rear fingerprint sensor, and probably also a headphone jack – the Pixel 4a. Supposedly there was a Pixel 4a XL it has now been canceled so that Google can focus on the single standard-size model. Therefore, it is possible that it is this now extinct phone from which Laudtec has received schematics and made this design.
Despite the Pixel 3a launch last year in May, we’ve been waiting for the Pixel 4a to launch multiple times just to delay the release date. There’s even a chance that he’ll share his release with the Pixel 5, which is expected to arrive in October.
With all this disruption, the case maker, wanting to bring a Pixel 5 case design to market as quickly as possible, may have decided on the wrong set of specs. Otherwise, if this case really fits the Pixel 5, many smartphone rumors and rumors will turn red.
In the meantime, we are still awaiting more conclusive information about the Pixel 5. However, we can expect a few things about its hardware. Using a Snapdragon 765 chipset seems likely, in order to keep the price of the phone low, as well as adding a third camera on the back for ultra-wide shots. It will likely also have a 90Hz or higher refresh rate display, and will come pre-installed with Android 11.
