Google Pixel 4a will beat OnePlus Nord with two functions

This post originally appeared on July 27 and was updated on July 29. Update below.

For those frustrated consumers waiting patiently for Google’s next mid-range phone, the Pixel 4a, to land, OnePlus’ new “Nord” phone should be tempting

The iPhone SE siren song was loud enough to rob Android users, perhaps the Nord is the final temptation for Android fans who have a roll of notes burning a hole in their pockets.

But there are good reasons to wait. Recent leaks have surprised us with the news that the Pixel 4a will support 5G connectivity, which means a much more powerful phone than expected. Of course, the Nord does too, so what else does the new Google phone need to do to hold on to those patiently waiting patients?

Update 07/29: There may be another good reason to go for the Pixel 4a when it lands, it appears that OnePlus Nord suffers from some display issues. Nord owners complain about Reddit and the OnePlus forums They noticed a purple tint when the screen brightness drops below 25%.

In a statement to 9To5Google, OnePlus explained that this is sometimes a quirk of AMOLED displays. “OnePlus Nord comes with a high-quality 90Hz AMOLED display. Under specific low-brightness circumstances, slight discoloration of the display may occur due to the properties of the AMOLED display; this is characteristic of all OLED displays and the grade fading will vary depending on other display properties. This is not a quality issue and will not affect daily use or screen durability. OnePlus will continue to seek cutting-edge display technologies and strive to provide the best possible user experience “

Check the links above and see for yourself, the purple hue is very pronounced on those devices. With that said, many users responded to the original posters saying they hadn’t experienced the problem. If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because the OnePlus 8 suffered a similar problem.

The flagship OnePlus device received complaints from users about a green tinted screen and a black crush, which is where the darkest areas of the screen are pixelated. An update partially solved the problem for some, but for others it was probably a hardware error. Based on that statement, it doesn’t appear that OnePlus will release an update for Nord, nor does it seem to think there is a problem. However, that can change if enough users complain.

The drop

Little by little, the advantage that Google’s feature drop program has given the company has become clear. Previous updates have provided improved selfies, car crash detection, a new digital wallet, and a feature that automatically detects your calls before answering them, all at no additional cost. That same update program is now coming to your Pixel Bud headphones.

This guaranteed consistency of new AI-based features makes it hard to fight Google phones. They are always evolving and responding to new trends and user needs. Of course, other companies can do this, but largely do not. Or, at least, not at this frequency and not with so many new features.

Google also has a built-in advantage with its AI work, where most (if not all) of the feature updates we’ve seen since last December come from. There’s a good chance you might be surprised by an unusual new addition to your phone that you didn’t expect every few months.

Fortunately for rivals, Google makes such fundamental mistakes elsewhere: in battery life (Pixel 4 XL), memory management (Pixel 3), and the criminal lack of camera sensor options (all pixels). ), that this characteristic drop advantage is slightly opaque. But the Pixel “a” brand is slightly different, last year’s device wasn’t loaded with the mistakes of its more expensive siblings (except for the lack of a wide-angle camera). Combine that solid foundation with the constant addition of new features to your already cheap phone and Google has a winning formula.

Price

We don’t know what the Pixel 4a’s main price will be, but previous leaks have pointed to $ 399 (via a marketing image by the reputed leaker Evan Blass), with more leaks and then revising the price to $ 350 after the launch of the iPhone SE.

However, there may be a second, more expensive Pixel 4a that supports 5G, which could be closer to the Nord price. At the upfront cost and processor they use, the Nord and Pixel 4a 5G may be similar. But what we do know is that Google is not shy to discount its products. Last year’s Black Friday deals had a $ 100 square discount from the Pixel 3a, there were also intermittent discounts throughout the year and a bundle at the Google store in the UK, at launch, which saw Pixel purchases 3rd with a free Nest Hub (read here why Nest Hub Max has become such an important device in recent weeks).

Google has this in its arsenal: a range of other products (laptops, smart home tech, headsets) that you can bundle your phones with when the times get desperate. I bet we’ll see some nice Google exchange deals too (oddly, OnePlus doesn’t seem to accept Google Pixel phones for the exchange).

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve dropped out of camera capacity for reasons I think the Pixel 4a could be a better phone. We all know that Google’s superiority in computational photography makes its phones the best on the market for still images, but the search company’s insistence on not including additional sensors, such as a wide-angle lens, is irritating, especially when the competition like the Nord and the Moto G 5G In addition, it has a series of sensors (although inferior). We’ll have to see if this long-standing policy changes when the 4a finally lands.
