Karl Geiger wins his first major individual ski jumping title at the Planica World Ski Flight Championships. After the Oberstdorfer entered the break as leader yesterday, he defended his lead on Saturday with flights of 240.5 and 231.5 meters. With a total of 877.2 points, Geiger prevailed with only 0.5 points ahead of Halvor Egner Granerud, who reached 239 and 243 meters (876.7 pts). Markus Eisenbichler secured bronze with widths of 234.5 and 230 meters (859.3 p.).
The fact that Karl Geiger takes the title to Germany is quite surprising as Markus Eisenbichler was considered DSV’s greatest hope in the run-up to the World Cup. Geiger laid the foundation for today’s victory in the third round when, despite comparatively difficult conditions, he was able to not only defend his lead with the longest jump, but also extend it. “That is indescribable. I wouldn’t have thought about it before the weekend. I knew that I like the hill and that I can fly well here. But it’s amazing that it works like this here. I’m in awe, ”Geiger applauded afterward.
Horngacher: “Competition that puts your nerves on edge”
“It was an exciting and stressful competition. Karl only extended his lead, his second jump was decent too. Granerud detonated a real rocket, but luckily it was enough for Karl. We are very happy to have won the first two medals, ”said national coach Stefan Horngacher at ZDF.
Pius Paschke and Constantin Schmid also performed correctly on the second day of the flight at Planica, but they narrowly missed the top ten with 11th and 14th places respectively.
Hayböck presents a medal in the final
Not only the fight for gold, but also for the other medals remained very exciting until the end. In the third round Michael Hayböck – fourth at halftime – already showed a strong 237.5 meters, but in the final the Upper Austrian did not exceed 220.5 meters. In view of the surviving Covid 19 disease, fourth place in the World Ski Flying Championships can still be considered a great success.

The Poles once again presented themselves as a particularly strong team. While Michal Dolezal’s team has yet to wait for their first singles win this season, they are gradually becoming favorites for Sunday’s team decision, with Piotr Zyla (7th), Kamil Stoch (8th) and Andrzej Stekala (10th) placed in the top ten for three Poles in individual decision.
In the middle, Robert Johansson of Norway placed fifth and top Japanese Yukiya Sato came sixth. As one of the big winners, Evgeniy Klimov also finished the individual decision of the World Ski Flying Championship in ninth place.
Lanisek challenges a short-term manager change
There was a real explosion in the Slovenian team even before the competition. After Timi Zajc harshly attacked the Slovenian coach on Friday night, Gorazd Bertoncelj took the necessary measures and resigned with immediate effect. Under the direction of acting coach Robert Hrgota, Slovenian ski jumpers had no chance of winning precious metals at their local World Championships; only Anze Lanisek impressed with his 228 meters in the final and took twelfth place. Zajc was suspended from the association after his statements and has not started anymore.
