Winter is back, just in time for the ice saints

Over the weekend, the weather in Germany was still early in the summer, but from Monday it will be significantly colder. Even snow and frost are possible.

Just in time for Monday’s ice saints, temperatures will once again be cool and almost wintry. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts a temperature drop for Monday. “Snowfall in southern Germany is likely to be possible at low altitudes. Frost and ground frost will also be a temporary problem again,” the DWD forecast on Friday says. Therefore, the 20 degree mark is only exceeded in the southeastern tip of Bavaria. 9 to 14 degrees is the rule.

The cold front coincided with the first day of the so-called ice saints. “This is more of a coincidence,” says meteorologist Jens Hoffmann. Cold temperatures on the days of the Ice Saints in mid-May (May 11-15: Mamertus, Pankratius, Servatius, Bonifatius, and Sophia) are not the rule, but a general warning: “Be careful with plants, it can get colder in May. “

Cold and severe rain

The weekend is forecast to be warm, but volatile. Saturday is cloudy and partly rainy with thunderstorms. Starting Sunday, according to the DWD, stormy rain of around 25 liters per square meter can be expected in no time. Northwest Germany is saved from thunderstorms, but not from cold: a maximum of 15 degrees is expected in the North Sea.

“A cold front runs through Germany on Monday and reaches the Alps at night,” says DWD meteorologist Marco Manitta. “Then when the cold air comes in, the snow line falls.” Rain freezes from Saarland to Niederlausitz above 700 meters increasingly to white scales. “It could be that the highest elevations of the low mountain ranges turn white for a moment.”

On Tuesday night, cold air also reaches southern Germany: “There is a drop in temperature, before that we have summer and it is almost wintry at night,” says the meteorologist. “If it disappears, there is a risk of frost throughout Germany.”

The nights remained cold, but temperatures rose again. As of Wednesday summer temperatures are slowly returning.
