After a car with an escort vehicle of Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) crashed on Tuesday night, an injured one-year-old girl is in mortal danger. This was announced by a police spokesman at the request of SPIEGEL.

A 33-year-old man traveling in the same car was seriously injured in the crash Monday night, and a 29-year-old man was slightly injured in the passenger seat.

According to police, the boy was sitting in the back seat of a car that had slid into the support vehicle parked on the wet road from Autobahn 81 north of Heilbronn.

Police: “Unfortunately, we have accidents of this type every day”

Before that, Kretschmann’s company car skidded, hit the railing, and then stopped on the shoulder. Then the escort vehicle and a police car also stopped at the roadside. The head of government, who was not behind the wheel, was unhurt.

As reported by the dpa news agency, citing police information, the driver of the company car and the other seriously injured motorist are being investigated on the initial suspicion that they had not adjusted the speed of their cars to the weather conditions. “Unfortunately, we have accidents of this type every day,” said a police spokesman for the dpa. “And these investigations are then a normal process.”

Kretschmann wants to continue the summer tour

As government spokesman Rudi Hoogvliet had told SPIEGEL, heavy rains and hydroplaning had caused the car to break down. Kretschmann was badly affected by the subsequent accident, Hoogvliet said. “We sincerely hope that the two seriously injured people make a full recovery.”

The prime minister wants to continue his interrupted summer “Status Today” tour on Wednesday afternoon as scheduled, a government spokesman said in response to a request from SPIEGEL. Kretschmann had initially canceled several tour dates on Tuesday.
