When Maradona left a press conference because of Thomas Müller
All over the world, people mourn Diego Maradona. His land, Argentina, celebrates three days of national mourning, in Naples – Maradona played there for seven years – a day of mourning was proclaimed in his honor, and even the Pope included it in his prayers.
For many, Diego Maradona was an idol, for some even the best footballer of all time. The whole world was amazed when the little Argentine easily dribbled over the best defenders.
But it was not difficult for him to attract attention even near the square. With Diego Armando Maradona, not only a great name in the world of football says goodbye, but also a producer of headlines before the Lord.
Curious press conference: Maradona does not want to sit on the podium with Müller
Many will well remember a scene from 2010. On March 3, 2010, a Bayern youth talent will make his debut for the German national team in a friendly against Argentina (0: 1). Thomas Müller, who is still on the verge of having his football breakthrough at age 20, shares the press conference podium with then-Argentina coach Diego Maradona.
However, he is not particularly happy with the presence of Müller, on the contrary: Maradona, who is used to sitting next to the great figures of football, is surprised not to sit next to the coach (in this case Löw), turns around, says he doesn’t know Thomas Müller and leaves again.
He didn’t want to sit next to a “rogue”, a rascal.

Maradona later explains: “I didn’t know I was a player.” Then he apologizes to Müller.
Many were confused by the answer, however, because the Argentine had just said minutes before, amidst his excitement, that he did not want to give a press conference with a German player. Müller had also put in a convincing performance on the pitch for almost 70 minutes before being replaced by Cacau.

Months later: Müller draws attention to sports
That same year, Thomas Müller ensures that the icon Diego Maradona never forgets him, and knows no mercy. The next meeting will take place in the summer. In the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, Müller only needed three minutes to score 1-0 against Maradona’s Argentines. When the final whistle sounded, the soccer nation was kicked out of the tournament with a 4-0 package.
Thomas Müller later becomes the top scorer and wins the “Golden Boot” and has been world famous since then at the latest. The Bayern fans had not yet forgotten about Maradonas’ campaign.

At a game in August 2010, after Müller’s breakthrough at the World Cup, they raised a banner that read: “We know Thomas, but who is Diego?” They alluded to the special press conference which was an unforgettable experience for Müller at the time.
A World Cup later, Germany won their first group match 4-0 against Portugal, Müller scored three goals. The Argentine newspaper “Ole” published the headline the next day: “Diego, the boy’s name is Müller!” Maradona addressed conciliatory words to the then international: “Thomas Müller has no muscles, but he played incredibly well today.”
