Poverty, hunger, war – Erich Karl experienced all this firsthand. However, the 107-year-old has kept his secret weapon against crises to this day. Just one worry won’t let go.

Erich Karl experienced World War I as a Weimar child, World War II as an adult. The now 107-year-old endured hunger, poverty and suffering. Today he lives in Berlin-Köpenick and remembers more than 100 years of German history and crisis. The latest challenge for him: the corona pandemic. The 107-year-old reveals which secret recipe drives him relentlessly and which takes away his fear of death.

In the video above you can see how Erich Karl experienced first-hand more than 100 years of German history, what he fears most in the days of Corona and what he is most likely to advise in times of crisis. Alternatively, see the video here too.

The photos of Erich Karl that were used in the video were taken by war photographer Dominic Nahr. He has traveled the world to portray eleven people who have survived the worst wars of the last 100 years. All the photos were taken in the picture book “Ich lebe!” published by the non-governmental organization “Save the Children”.
