Extended mask requirement, curfew, restrictions on participants for celebrations: According to SPD health expert Lauterbach, the new crown measures alone are not enough to contain the pandemic. The doctor asks for improvements.
SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach believes the lockdown is likely to resume in a few weeks if new infections are not controlled. “If we fail to restrict personal contacts in the next two or three weeks, the numbers will have increased so much in a few weeks that we will just have another lockdown,” Lauterbach told “Bild am Sonntag.”
“Unfortunately, the restrictions that have now been decided are not enough to avoid the overcrowding of intensive care units and a significant increase in the death rate in December. We have to readjust that.” It’s no longer enough to “be careful and stick to the AHA + L rules,” Lauterbach said. “Also, everyone should reduce their contacts as much as possible.”
Regarding the current development of crown numbers, Lauterbach said: “The reality is already there, exponential growth is returning.” The SPD politician asked, among other things, divided classes in schools. “If we don’t want schools with regular dropouts to become hotspots, school classes should now be divided into morning and afternoon classes.”
Lauterbach also called for a change in communication: “In recent days, the impression has emerged that the pandemic is being fueled mainly by private celebrations and large parties. That was probably the case at times. But it is no longer the case.” The virus is again too widespread for that, even among older people. Any contact, no matter where, could be contaminated.
The SPD politician came out in favor of introducing an incidence greater than 50 in addition to the general incidence limit of 50 new infections in 100,000 people in seven days, as suggested by the Berlin virologist Christian Drosten. This value would reflect the spread of the virus in the most vulnerable age groups. Lauterbach cautioned against trivialization: “Covid-19 is an insidious disease that can damage the lungs, kidneys, and brain even in young people,” he said.
