In Hamburg, the metro and buses stopped all day on Saturday. Ver.di had summoned the employees of Hochbahn and the Hamburg-Holstein transport company (VHH) to carry out a warning strike until Sunday morning at 3 a.m.
The underground platforms are empty, as are the bus stops. And there were explanatory words on the notice boards: A ver.di warning strike resulted in restrictions on local public transport in and around Hamburg on Saturday. S-Bahn and regional trains operated normally.
Buses and trains should be back on Sunday
Hochbahn and VHH assume that all buses and subways will be operational again from the start of operations on Sunday. The warning strike was supposed to end at 3 a.m. Sunday morning.
Warning strike annoys retailers
While the warning strike was largely understood by bystanders, there was great anger among retailers. “This is the last one,” a salesperson told NDR 90.3. “We are all struggling to survive, we are here with 60 percent money and there is a discussion about whether they will get a few more euros.”
Collective bargaining failed

The union ver.di wants to increase pressure on employers with work stoppages. The previous week collective bargaining failed. In an open letter, Hamburg’s local transport workers ask for your understanding.
Relief and better recording of overtime
Ver.di requires for the approximately 7,000 employees in Hamburg, among other things, relief days for shift work, the recording of overtime from the first minute in the event of vehicle delays and a limitation of daily working time to nine hours. Furthermore, preparatory and follow-up work should be recognized as working time. A letter also said that the hours and the traffic on the streets left little time to go to the bathroom.
Ver.di accuses Hochbahn of having led the negotiations to the wall and wants Transportes senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) to interfere. The municipal company has called the union to arbitration and considers it irresponsible to call a 24-hour warning strike during Christmas and Corona. Therefore, the union is hurting downtown retail, whose employees also represent ver.di.
Hochbahn talks about a sustainable offer
The Hochbahn spoke of a viable offer based on the collective agreement for public service. In addition, the company offered more relief to employees, for example, additional days off for night work.
Schleswig-Holstein districts were also affected
The Ahrensburg, Rahlstedt and Ratzeburg depots, from which some VHH branches drove buses, were excluded from the warning strike. “In view of the currently high number of infections, from the task force’s point of view, it is important to prevent passengers from squeezing into a few crowded vehicles in the hope of a purported transportation offer,” Hochbahn said. According to VHH, the entire Hamburg area and the Schleswig-Holstein districts of Stormarn, Duchy of Lauenburg, Pinneberg and Segeberg were affected by the strike.
Not the first warning strike
In mid-October, during a 24-hour warning strike, local public transport in and around Hamburg was almost completely stopped. Only S-Bahn and regional trains were not affected. By the end of September, the employees had also stopped working.
