A warning strike in local public transport largely brought metro and bus traffic to a halt in Hamburg on Tuesday morning. Starting at noon, operations gradually resumed.
Much of the local public transport in Hamburg has been idle since the start of operations. “The turnout is high and the mood is good,” said Hamburg’s ver.di department traffic chief Natale Fontana in the morning. According to the information, around 1,000 employees stopped working. Around 350 public transport employees from HVV and VHH gathered at a warehouse in Alsterdorf for a rally.
As announced by the Hamburger Hochbahn, all four subway lines and most bus lines were affected by the warning strike. Starting at 12 noon, operations should be gradually restarted. However, it will still be some time before operations become stable again. The Hochbahn assumes that all subways will be back on time by 3pm at the latest. Regional and S-Bahn trains were not affected by the warning strikes.
Ver.di wants to increase pressure on employers
The ver.di union called for nationwide warning strikes on local public transport to increase pressure on employers for new collective agreements for the industry. “It’s not about the money, it’s about the working conditions,” Fontana said. That’s why the union rescinded national collective agreements in the spring. Ver.di now wants, for example, to have uniform standards for topics such as vacation days, the salary of the thirteenth month or the Christmas bonus. In Hamburg, according to the information, around 7,000 people on the elevated railway and the VHH are affected by collective bargaining.
Already strikes in the public sector
In recent days, as part of collective bargaining for the public service, city cleaners and employees of the port administration, kindergartens, hospitals and facilities for the disabled had already ceased to function.
