Formula 1 driver Nico Hulkenberg could intervene again at Racing Point Focus

Racing Point team boss Otmar Szafnauer describes the situation on ‘RTL’ as a “lucky coincidence” because Hülkenberg was there anyway. “And we’ve taken his seat to every track so far.”

Because Hülkenberg has already replaced Racing Point twice this year, specifically in the two Silverstone races. At that time he represented Sergio Pérez, who had to be absent due to a positive result for coronavirus.

Hülkenberg 2020 as di Resta 2017

Hülkenberg’s first spontaneous comeback in Formula 1 2020 failed at Silverstone due to technology – he missed the race. A week later, he drove to the same position in the P3 standings and achieved P7 in the Formula 1 anniversary Grand Prix.

Now Hülkenberg goes straight to qualifying at the Nürburgring without prior training. The last time there was a similar situation at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2017: Williams driver Felipe Massa felt uncomfortable, so Paul di Resta took over the car on short notice for qualifying and also participated in the race.

Hülkenberg should have worked as a television expert at the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, as well as during his first assignment this year at Silverstone, where he was scheduled to visit the studio in Cologne before being called up to Britain.

Ralf Schumacher advises against spontaneous use

This time, however, former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher advised him against spontaneously working for Racing Point. Reason in ‘Sky’: Hulkenberg could only lose without training. And: “I personally wouldn’t take the risk.”

Racing Point, however, believes in Hülkenberg and his abilities: “He has jumped before and knows the car and the team,” reports the racing team.

The necessary approval from the World Automobile Federation (FIA) is also available. So Hülkenberg is back on track with his personal start number 27 and, according to the regulations, with the transmission, gearbox and tires that were originally intended for Stroll at the Nürburgring.

This means that there are two German drivers in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Hülkenberg and Sebastian Vettel. Actually, Mick Schumacher should have taken the wheel at Alfa Romeo on Friday. But his training session was a victim of bad weather: Formula 1 did not race at all on Friday.
