Thomas Oppermann, a longtime SPD politician, has died. As ntv and RTL discovered, the 66-year-old died in the night after collapsing while filming television with ZDF and was taken to a hospital in Gottingen. So far there is no information on the cause of death.
Oppermann had been a member of the SPD since 1980 and has been vice president of the Bundestag since the 2017 Bundestag elections. Before that, he was managing director of parliament for ten years and then chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. In late August this year, Oppermann announced that he would not run for the Bundestag for the first time since 2005 in the 2021 elections.

Thomas Oppermann leaves behind his partner, a son and a daughter and two daughters from a previous marriage.
