US President Trump’s announcement: Sudan and Israel normalize relations

First the Emirates, then Bahrain, and now Sudan: After decades of official radio silence, according to US President Trump, a third Arab League state wants to establish diplomatic relations with Israel this year.

After the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, according to the US government, Sudan has now also announced the normalization of its relations with Israel. This was announced by the vice spokesman of the White House, Judd Deere, citing the president of the United States, Donald Trump. This is “another important step towards peace in the Middle East.”

The White House had previously announced that Trump had informed Congress of his intention to remove Sudan from the notorious US list of state supporters of terrorists. In return, Sudan agreed to compensate American victims of terrorism and their families. The payment of 335 million dollars by the interim government of Sudan has already been received, according to the White House.

Netanyahu seeks allies against Iran

After the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, Sudan is the third Arab League state to announce diplomatic ties with Israel this year. The normalization of Israel’s relations with the United States’ Arab allies in the region is a central goal of Trump’s Middle East policy. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, is trying to establish ties with Arab and African states to take joint action against Iran.

Big disappointment with the Palestinians

The Palestinian leadership condemned the announced normalization of relations. This violates the Saudi peace initiative and the statements of the Arab League, said President Mahmoud Abbas’s office in Ramallah. “No one has the right to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause,” the statement said. The path to a just peace in the Middle East must be based on international law.

Until now, many Arab states had made the resolution of the conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis a prerequisite for normalizing relations with Israel. That is why the Palestinian leadership feels betrayed by the recent agreements.
