Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Joe Biden on his electoral victory. The Kremlin had announced in the past that it would await the official result. “I am ready to exchange and contact them,” Putin said, according to the Reuters news agency. Putin wishes Biden “every success” and is confident that the United States and Russia “despite their differences” can help solve many of the world’s problems and challenges.
Relations between Russia and the United States are very tense. Biden has promised to take a decisive position against Russia. Putin waited a long time to congratulate Biden. Even Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Biden in late November. The official election result will not be announced in Congress until January 6, but after the electorate confirmed Biden as president of the United States on Monday night, Moscow apparently saw no reason to withhold congratulations on more time.
Trump has yet to admit defeat
Until now, Putin had indirectly offered Biden a collaboration. “We will cooperate with anyone who has the trust of the American people,” Putin said on state television on November 22. The winner of the election must be recognized by the opposing side or the final result must be legally confirmed. Trump has yet to admit defeat and has taken legal action against the election result.
Trump’s community connections with Russia had weighed heavily on his tenure. There is strong evidence that Moscow interfered in the 2016 US presidential election and promoted Trump’s entry into the White House. Putin, who advocates an authoritarian and ultra-conservative leadership style, has more connections with someone like Trump than with the American Democrats, who denounce more democratic regressions and human rights violations in Russia.
Trump has made little secret of his admiration for Putin. As early as 2007, the future president of the United States wrote in a letter to Putin that he was “a great admirer” of Putin.
In the Electoral College vote, Biden got 306 votes, 232 votes went to Trump. That reflects the result in the states. This election is actually a formality, this year it was given special attention because Trump does not recognize the election. Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20. So Trump’s term ends automatically, regardless of whether the election recognizes him or not.
